Friday Tournament Update

KIUA Sports's picture

All 3 of the KIUA Flames sports clubs are involved in tournaments this weekend. The HS Boys' baseball team is in Nagoya, the MS Boys' volleyball team is at SOIS in Minoh, and the MS Girls' softball team is on Rokko Island at CA.

The HS boys won both of their games today, beating the home team, the Dolphins 6-3 and one of two SOIS teams participating in the tournament, 5-1. They are slated to play the Sons of the Light team from Hyogo Prefecture on Saturday morning in the semi-finals.

The MS boys did not fare very well in the first 2 of 4 round-robin matches, falling to CA and SOIS, two perenially strong teams. Saturday they will play NIS and MBIS at 9:00am and 11:00am, respectively. The top 4 teams in the A Division will have another play-off match later in the afternoon.

The MS girls played well, winning 2 of their 3 games today. In the first game, they held on to beat SOIS 8-6, but then struggled against CA, losing 16-1. The afternoon sun was taking its toll and the girls were not able to find many holes in a quite solid Falcons' defense. After some rest, the girls came alive in their final game, overcoming Marist 16-9. There were many good hits, including some in-the-park home runs, which made up for some lapses in defense, though there were some good plays there, too. The Flames will take on the SOIS Sabers once again in the semi-final game at 9:30am before some fun competitions at lunch time, then a final set of games starting at 1:00pm.

We are thankful for the parents who came out to support the teams! We hope to see you again tomorrow!

weekend wrap-up

KIUA Sports's picture

The MS Girls' Softball team won their first game ever last Saturday! They came out on top against the Marist B team, winning 10-5. This was the highlight of a long day with lots of good softball practice. The girls did very well overall, improving and gaining valuable experience through playing 4 games. Since we only had 10 girls, everyone got to play--all the time!

The first game was an eye-opener for the girls as they played one of the best teams in the international school league. The Marist girls' A team was aggressive in hitting and very competent in their fielding. Being just the second weekend of play, the girls had not seen how well softball could be played until they faced the Bulldogs. The shock gradually wore off and the Flames were able to make some plays to get the Marist girls out. The score was quite lopsided, but when the dust settled, the Flames had gotten some hits and scored some runs, bowing to the Mighty Marist A team 20-3.

The second game was a different story. The Flames hit the ball better, made good plays and started out on top and led the whole way. The team celebrated their first win and were upbeat as they climbed into the van to head to SOIS.

At SOIS, the warm afternoon sun began to wear on the girls, but they persevered and play both the A and B teams. While they lost both games, there were good hits and good lessons learned which should provide the team with a good basis for the last weekend of games and for the tournament.

The HS Boys' baseball team and the MS Boys' volleyball team both played against the Sabers. The MS boys--both A and B teams--began slowly, but improved through each set. The HS boys game in Minoh was a pitching duel for most of the game. Joshua Hutton pitched well, but the Sabers were able to scrape together some hits and take advantage of errors to score runs. The Flames faced a tough pitcher and were not able to make any run-scoring hits. The final score was 6-0 in favor of the Sabers.

KIUA Sports Wrap up

KIUA Sports's picture

This past Saturday, the MS girls and boys traveled up to Nagoya International School. This was the girls' first outing on the softball field, and they did well! The girls got some great game experience and enjoyed the competition. There were good hits and plays that made for celebrations. The A-squad game finished with the Dolphins on top 4-3, but it was exciting that the Flames hit and ran well to score 3 runs! The B-squad game saw the Flames take the lead and things go back and forth over several innings. The Dolphins had a big inning and went up 12-6, but the Flames came charging back, closing the gap to just 2 runs. While the Flames held the Dolphins scoreless in their last frame, the Flames were not able to capitalize and the game ended 12-10. All in all, it was a great day and everyone went home happy and excited to play again.

The MS Boys are improving and they did well enough to beat the Dolphins in the A-squad match. The B-squad did not win, but they did get some good court time and experience.

The HS boys had a rough outing against the Sons of the Light, losing to them. Coach Harii and the Flames hope to bounce back and play well against the SOIS Sabers next Saturday.
