HS basketball teams both finish second in WJAA tournaments

KIUA Sports's picture

The KIU Academy Flames had a good weekend on the basketball court. The boys traveled to Nagoya to play against 5 other international schools in their tournament, and the girls were at Marist Brothers with 4 other schools.

On the first day, the boys played very good basketball, overcoming a scrappy Hokkaido Huskies team 65-57, and dominating the Sons of the Light 65-35. In the semifinal Saturday morning, the Flames played hard and beat Marist 49-38. This set up an afternoon final against the Dolphins on their home court. The Dolphins came out strong and quickly went ahead 10-2 closing out the first quarter with a commanding lead. The Flames battled back, but were not able to narrow the gap to less than 8 points, falling in the end, 48-34. The boys played well overall and would have liked to repeat the championship of the previous season, but coming in second was a good accomplishment after the loss of so many seniors last year.
Seiji Barrera was named to the tournament's all-star team; he led the team in points and consistently pulled down rebounds. Aaron Annan contributed significantly with his shooting and team leadership at the point guard position.

HS Girls
The HS girls played well, but had to go up against a very strong Marist team in the final. The girls did their best, but could not match the Bulldogs. They were happy to be second, this time. Cindy Rohrer was named the Flames' MVP for the tournament.

Sports Weekend Wrap-up

KIUA Sports's picture

On Saturday, the HS basketball teams competed in their first games in over a month. After coming back from Christmas break, both teams were rusty, but the competition provided an opportunity to take some of it off. The boys traveled to Inagawa-cho in Hyogo to face the Sons of the Light International Christian School at a gym near their school. The varsity game ended in a tie 58-58. The junior varsity teams then played two short quarters to give them some valuable playing time and to close out their season.

The HS girls went to Canadian Academy and played the Falcons. With a few of the girls absent, the team struggled against a rejuvenated Falcons' team. On Monday night, the girls traveled to Ikoma and took on the Kansai Christian School Eagles. The Flames looked much better, handily beating the Eagles in a called game.

The MS girls also played the KCS Eagles in the opener on Monday. This was this year's squad's first game and they came up with a tie against the Eagles 20-20.

It was good for all the students involved in the basketball clubs to get time on the floor this weekend!

12/4-5 Weekend Review

KIUA Sports's picture

MS BOYS
Last weekend marked the finale of the MS Boys' Basketball season. The boys' A-team participated in the tournament at Marist and found it hard going on the court. The Flames struggled against bigger, faster and more experienced opponents for most of the tournament, but they were able to come away with a victory in the final game, earning themselves 7th place. Several of the boys commented that they enjoyed the experience and had fun participating as well as spending a night away from home with their buddies.

HS BOYS and GIRLS at NIS
The girls' team came away with 2 victories with the varsity team winning over the Dolphins 41-32 and the junior varsity girls winning 26-16. The boys had more of a battle on their hands against the Dolphins. Playing without some of the key players against a physical opponent, the varsity lost 54-35. The jv squad only had 6 players and were overmatched. They did their best and gained experience through the process.
