Academy Sports Wrap-up for 4/11

KIUA Sports's picture

This past weekend, the Academy sports clubs got underway for this semester.

The HS & MS combined team traveled to Marist and played 3 softball games. It was the first time for many of the students to play, so it was a challenge and great learning experience. The girls won their first game against SOIS 13-12, coming back from an 11-run deficit. The next two games against  strong Marist teams were just as exciting, though the Flames did not come out on top. The Bulldogs HS team won 5-2 and the MS team won 15-3.

The MS boys also traveled to Marist and played strong volleyball against the Bulldogs. The A team won their match, only dropping one set. There are many students new to volleyball among the B team players, so their match was a good opportunity to learn the skills as well as the rules of the sport.

The HS boys' baseball team hosted Marist in an evening game at Tanabe Koen Stadium. Several students and parents came out to support the team. This first game of the season provided many of the KIUA players their first chance to take the field. The game was filled with lots of excitement as the Flames and Bulldogs did lots of batting and running. The game had to be called due to time in the 5th inning with the Flames coming out on the short end, 24-15.

This weekend, the girls' softball team will be in Nagoya Friday and Saturday, playing and enjoying the opportunity to be outside. Lord willing, the lovely weather will hold and we will have sunshine for a change!

The MS Boys' volleyball team will be playing at our "home" gym, Yamashiro Kinrosha Fukushi Kaikan (Ide gym), so we encourage anyone and everyone to come and support the team. The A-team match is scheduled to start at 9:30am, with the B-team match following. Please come and support the MS boys!

HSB Soccer team takes 3rd place in wjaa

KIUA Sports's picture

The KIUA Flames participated in the WJAA small schools tournament at Nagoya International School along with 5 other teams from Nagoya, Kobe, Iwakuni and Yokohama. During the two-day competition, the team played 4 matches. On Friday, the Flames downed Canadian Academy 3-0 in a match that could have seen a higher scoreline. Shots from Andy W., Kent T. and Kaito Y. just missed finding the net. The second match of the day proved to be much tougher against the dark horse of the tournament, the St. Maur Cougars from Yokohama. Much quicker and more athletic than the first opponents, the Cougars outscored and out-hustled the Flames, taking the match 3-2. The day ended with St. Maur at the top of the pool and KIUA in second. This result pitted the Flames against the M.C. Perry Samurai, a well-coached squad from the U.S. Marine AirBase in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi.

On Saturday, the team determined to play a defensive match. Throughout the match, the Flames kept the Samurai from finding the net. Sean O. had many good saves in goal. The stingy defense gradually wore down the Perry players and provided counterattacking opportunities in the second half. Unfortunately, the Flames failed to capitalize, and the match ended in a 0-0 draw. In the ensuing penalty kicks, Perry converted more of their shots, so they went through to the finals, 4-3. The Flames took on the Marist Bulldogs for 3rd place. In a back-and-forth match, the Flames drew even in the closing minutes with a well-placed Kaito free-kick. With the match ending in a 3-3 stalemate, penalty kicks were taken to decide the winner. This time, the Flames came out on top, 5-4. While the Flames could not win a second soccer championship, they played a good tournament and finished the season with a win. KIUA was the only team to hold the champions, M.C. Perry, scoreless during the tournament. Well done, players and coaches!

Last weekend, the MS girls' basketball and boys' soccer teams finished out their seasons at the WJAA tournaments.

MSGBK: The girls took third place, beating Senri-Osaka to finish on a winning note. This is the first trophy the girls' basketball team has won in 5 years, according to Mr. Blocksom. Marist won the tournament in front of their home crowd in an exciting back-and-forth final with CA.

MSBS: The boys played at CA and came in fourth place. Mr. Simoes was happy with how the team did overall, though they would have liked to have finished higher, he felt it was good considering the strong competition.

HSBS: The HS boys hosted the CA junior varsity soccer team at Kizugawa Ground on a mild sunny day. The Flames dominated the play with good passing and attacking, winning handily over the Falcons, 6-0. The players were happy to win and to unveil their new uniforms.
