KIUA 2020 FALL TERM SPORTS

Dear parents/guardians and students,

The athletic department would like to welcome you back the fall semester.  We are preparing for a fall sports season that will include high school volleyball for both boys and girls, middle school baseball for the boys, and middle school volleyball for the girls.

We understand that there might be concerns about COVID-19 and participating in sports.  We are doing everything that we can to minimize the risks of contracting the virus while participating in sports.  You will be required to wear a mask while riding the bus to and from practice.  Our league, the WJAA, will be meeting during the last week of August to finalize protocols to allow for a fun and safe season.

Practice will begin August 24 for high school volleyball.  Practices will be held on Monday (24), Wednesday (26), and  Friday 28).  We will practice from 9:00-12:00 and 13:00-16:00 at Ide gymnasium.  Middle school girls are welcome to join in the morning practice sessions.  The school bus will pick students up at Shintanabe station at 8:40 and the school at 8:45.  It will be very warm in the gym so please drink plenty of water before coming to practice and bring water and sports drinks to practice.  It would be good to bring extra clothes to change into as you will be very sweaty.

Regular practices will begin with school.  Middle school baseball and volleyball will practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning on  September 1.  High school volleyball will practice on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays beginning on September 2.   The high school girls will be coached by Mr. Blocksom, the high school boys will be coached by Mr. King, and we are in the process of finding coaches for the MS teams.

More information regarding practices and games can be found on the sports calendar.

If you have any questions please contact me at adam.king@kyotoiu.ac.jp

Thank you

Weekend sports wrap-up

KIUA Sports's picture

It was a busy weekend for the Flames.  Two middle school teams participated in their season-ending tournament and the high school baseball played a home game.

The middle school girls' softball team saw their first action on Friday.  They played in 3 tournament games against some strong competition.  Even though this was the first time many of the girls had played they were excited to take the field.  The Flames struggled to keep pace with the high-powered offenses they faced and lost all 3 of their games, but the day started and ended with smiles and good sportsmanship. On Saturday morning the Flames played a must-win game in order to continue in the tournament.  It was a good game, but the lack of experience caught up with the team and they lost their early lead.  Even though they did not win any games the team had a great experience and made many good memories.

The middle school boys' A and B volleyball teams had high hopes for their tournament.  The A team came out strong but failed to capitalize in the early matches finishing the day with 0 wins and 2 losses.  The B team played very well but lost both of their matches in 3 sets.  Saturday started off great for both teams as they each won their first match of the tournament.  The A team had a chance to continue their winning ways but dropped a tough 3 set match to Marist to end their tournament.  The B team was able to continue their winning ways all the way to the championship match where they narrowly lost to the host Osaka Sabres.  Congratulations to all the teams for a great season.

The baseball team hosted the Marist Bulldogs in Joyo.  It was a great day for baseball.  The Flames fought hard to the very end, narrowly losing 11-9.  The team is gearing up for their tournament later this week.

With the Golden Week holiday, the Flames were not in action this past weekend.  However, they were in action Saturday, April 28.

The MS boys volleyball team traveled to Osaka where they played the Osaka Sabres and the Nagoya Dolphins.  The A team continued to perform well in the early match, defeating the Sabres 2 sets to 1.  In their second match, they had some trouble with the Dolphins and lost 2 sets to 1.  The B team continued their strong season defeating the Sabres 2 sets to 1 and the Dolphins 2 sets to 1.

The HS boys baseball traveled to Canadian Academy to face the Marist Brothers Bulldogs and the Osaka Sabres in a 3-way baseball festival.  It was a rough day for the Flames as they lost their first game to the Sabres 18 to 0.  In their second game, the Flames were able to score but it wasn't enough.  The Bulldogs came away with a 15-2 victory.

On Saturday, March 21 the middle school boys volleyball team traveled to Canadian Academy to face the Eagles.  The Flames were once again victorious winning 5 out of 6 sets.  The Flames B team came away with a tie, winning 3 sets and losing 3.  The team continues to make steady progress as the season continues.

The high school boys baseball team traveled to Nagoya to face the Dolphins.  This was the team's frost game of the year and they showed real potential.  They won the first game of the day 7-4.  They fought hard in the second game, coming up a little short in a 7-5 loss.  I heard from the Nagoya athletic director that the Flames looked very good, which was encouraging to hear.

The athletic department is happy to announce that we will have a middle school girls softball club this semester.  The first practice was held on Tuesday with 14 girls in attendance.  Practices will continue on Tuesday and Thursday until the end of the season.  The girls are looking forward to having a fun season.  Any 5th-8th-grade girl who is interested in playing talk to Mr. King.

The season-ending tournament will be held at Canadian Academy on May 11-12.  This is a fun time for the girls to play against many other schools and make friends with the other schools.
