About Parent-Teacher Conferences

Dear Parents,

We pray that you and your family are doing well.

This trimester we are not having regular face to face Parent-Teacher conferences, but a report about your child's progress will be posted this Monday (May 25th) around 3 PM on FACTS (Renweb) Family Portal* (click here for instructions on how to find it).

* Mid-Term Progress Reports are only available on the internet browser version of FACTS Family Portal (Renweb ParentsWeb). You can still view your child's grades for each class in the "Grade Book" section of the smartphone app version, but the teacher comments for the Mid-term Progress Report will not be accessible through the app.

Mid-term Progress Reports will also be sent to parent / student email accounts (only to the KIUA domain account ending in @kyotoiu.ac.jp).

Your child's homeroom teacher will contact you between May 25th and May 29th to discuss the progress report  with you.

Thank you,
KIU Academy

Dear Parents,

We appreciate your extreme patience and tireless effort in supporting your children during this challenging start to the 2020 school year.

The situation is slowly progressing toward an end to the State of Emergency for Kyoto and Osaka.

Unfortunately this does not mean that everything will return to normal immediately.

Governmental authorities have instructed schools to be cautious about re-starting classes as usual.

Many of their recommendations involve following a gradual approach to reopening and taking precautionary measures to limit close interactions and crowded situations.

We are discussing how to best put these recommendations into practice at KIUA.

We would also like to hear from you, so we prepared a survey to find out how KIUA parents feel about the present situation.

Please use the link below to find the survey. It will take only a few minutes to complete.

Thank you,

KIU Academy

Update about Live Classes on Google Meets

Dear KIUA parents and students,

It has come to our attention that KIUA teachers are using a variety of methods to set up and announce live classes on Google Meet, which sometimes causes confusion. So we are now asking all teachers to schedule Google Meets as assignments for their classes in Google Classroom using the Google Meet link which is on their class banner. This means you will hear about the Meet in the following ways:

1. Students will receive an email in their account informing them of the assignment/Meet
2. The Meet will show up in the "Upcoming" section on the left side of the classroom Stream page and on the classroom banner for that class
3. The Meet will also show up in the student's Google Calendar at the time when the Meet is scheduled

Some changes to be careful of because of the change to this method:

1. The Meet will NOT show up on the student’s Meet home screen
2. Students will not be able to enter the Meet until the teacher is there, so please do not give up if there is a message saying the student cannot enter

We hope this will lead to a smoother online experience for students and parents.
Note: Some teachers who have already set up Meets with small groups or individual students will continue using the method of announcing they have already established.

UPDATE: May 13, 2020

Dear Parents,

We pray that you and your family are doing well.

First we would like to make an announcement from the accounting office:

About the "Kyoto Prefecture Scholarship Benefit
There is an early benefit application system for parents of households on welfare and households exempt from resident tax per income with students in the 10th grade. If you would like to apply, please contact Mr. Nakai (Accounting).

We would also like to give you an update on the present situation for our school.

We currently plan to continue online schooling until at least May 31st. This is primarily because the Kyoto prefectural government requested schools to stay shut until that date.

The national government, however, has indicated that they might lift the state of emergency for Kyoto and other areas as early as May 15th.

Because of this, Kyoto prefecture might change their stance and choose to reopen schools earlier than May 31st.

But due to the fact that many KIUA students live in Osaka, a change in Kyoto prefecture's stance does not mean that we will automatically follow what Kyoto public schools do. The situation in Osaka still needs to be monitored and it will influence our future decisions.

We are preparing a Parents Survey to be sent out next week in order to gather feedback on how the online classes are going and how parents feel about the future reopening of the school.

Thank you for your patience and support during this process.

We will continue to provide updates as decisions are made.

UPDATE: May 1, 2020

Dear Parents,

We hope that your family is doing well.

We have also been very encouraged by the efforts of our students and teachers with their online studies.

Please note that KIU Academy will continue to observe all National Holidays.

We are at the doorstep of the Golden Week holidays and it is likely that the state of emergency will be extended.

It is our hope to be able to resume normal schooling as early as possible, but presently it does not seem prudent to reopen the KIUA campus.

Therefore KIU Academy will, for the time being, continue delivering academic content online.

When local and national authorities clarify their policies and expectations, we will revisit the school closure status and inform you.

We hope that you and your family will have a restful and enjoyable Golden Week.

On May 7th our online classes and course content will resume.

Thank you for your understanding,

KIU Academy

KIUA Online Schooling Update

Dear Parents,

We hope that your families are well and that your children are adapting to online learning.

Using the latest technology available, as of April 13th (Monday) KIU Academy has been conducting classes online for our students. Although we do not know how long the present situation will last, we are committed to supporting our students with their learning uninterrupted. This allows students to stay on task and on schedule for their present and future studies at KIU Academy.

Due to the present situation we have decided to cancel the Open House event which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, April 25th. The teachers will be posting class syllabi on Google Classroom by next Monday, April 27th. If you have questions about a class, please contact the teacher by email.

It is yet unclear when the state of emergency will be lifted, but we look forward to reopening our doors and conducting classes on campus again.

Update on the suspected COVID-19 case

Dear Families,

The parents of the student in question reported that a doctor examined the student and an X-ray image was taken.

The student had normal temperature (36.5 Celsius) and nothing suspicious was found (no abnormalities, pneumonia etc).

The doctor stated that a COVID-19 test was not necessary but the student should stay home for the next 2 weeks.

A doctor's certificate was also issued and submitted to the school.

We are glad that the student seems to be doing well, but we also continue to urge our students to:

  • Monitor their symptoms (use the Health Checkup Sheet school created)
  • Avoid non-urgent or unnecessary outings
  • Avoid making statements on social media without medical evidence. Whether it be about others or themselves..

Please continue to take care and make sure to read the Health and Safety Policies the school established for the present COVID-19 situation.

We hope that your children are adapting well to distance / online learning this term.

Thank you,

KIU Academy

Possible COVID-19 case

Dear KIUA Families,

It has come to the school's attention that a high school student might be infected with COVID-19.

Please note that this is NOT a confirmed fact.

We contacted the student this afternoon and spoke with the student and the parents.

Although the student presented mild symptoms (cough, sputum, etc.) for the last 3 days, the body temperature has been normal.

The parents have agreed that the proper authorities should be contacted tomorrow (April 15) so that, if appropriate, an official test can be taken.

At this time it is not certain that the authorities will allow a test because the symptoms are mild, but the parents said they will request the test.

For the time being, all students should take special care to:

  • Monitor their symptoms (use the Health Checkup Sheet school created)
  • Avoid non-urgent or unnecessary outings
  • Avoid making "public announcements" on social media without medical evidence. It can lead to unnecessary anxiety.

As before, please be reminded that "Consultation Days" are cancelled for all students (elementary, middle and high school).

Given the present situation, KIUA faculty and staff will be working primarily from home.

For more updates, please continue to check the KIU Academy News site or the announcements on FACTS (RenWeb).

Thank you,

KIU Academy

Consultation Days Cancelled 面談日(登校日)キャンセル

IMPORTANT: Due to the changes in the recommendations of Kyoto Prefecture, we will not be holding the weekly consultation days when we were planning to have students come to meet the teachers for help and review.
