UPDATE: April 3, 2020

Dear Parents,

We are continuing to make preparations for the start of the school year although a lot of uncertainty remains about the future.

In order to help us understand your needs, we ask that you respond to the online surveys we sent home with Report Cards.

The national government has not imposed a nation-wide closing of schools. Instead, they left this decision to local authorities.
As of 9:00 AM today, Kyoto prefecture, Kyoto city and Kyotanabe city have not made any official decision regarding school closures.

However, circumstances might change quickly and KIU Academy may have to start this academic year with online schooling.
We encourage parents to make preparations for this possibility.

UPDATE: April 1, 2020

Dear Parents,

Yesterday (March 31st) we mailed you the Report Cards and other information.
More information will be posted on this site in the coming days.
We ask that you read everything carefully so we can all be ready for the start of the new academic year.

At this time, we hope to start school as originally planned on April 9th.
However, we will continue to monitor national and local government pronouncements and will adjust as needed.

Thank you for your understanding and support.

UPDATE: March 30, 2020

Dear Parents,

We hope you and your family are enjoying the spring break despite difficult circumstances.

At KIU Academy we have been working on processing grades, printing Report Cards and making plans for the start of the new school year.

Our goal is to mail you all this information on Tuesday, March 31st.

As you may know, a few cases of the new coronavirus infection were confirmed in Kyotanabe city recently ( http://www.kyotanabe.jp/0000014665.html ) and also at Kyoto Sangyo University.

Thankfully, there are no suspected or confirmed COVID-19 cases within the KIUA community. We will continue to monitor this situation and will do our best to establish safety plans for resuming school.

We will also continue to post updates on this platform.

Thank you for your understanding,

KIU Academy

Elementary school update (March 3, 2020)

Today we sent packets of assignments to each elementary student’s home by mail. Most of the enclosed assignments will not affect your child’s grade for the term but are mainly sent for home study. Please encourage your child to do the assignments to help them review what they have learned and to develop their abilities. During school hours on weekdays (9:00 to 14:40), please urge your child to use this time as much as possible for study and work on assignments at home.

Homeroom teachers will be calling to see if you have any questions about the assignments we have sent.  Your child's subject teachers will also call from time to time to talk with the students about their progress if you would like.  If you have any questions about the assignments, please contact your child’s homeroom teacher by e-mail or mail the school at kiu@kyotoiu.ac.jp.

臨時休校期間中の事務室へのお問い合わせに関して School office hours and inquiries during school closure

事務室に関しましては現在のところ、平日9:00 -17:00の間で業務を継続いたします。

KIU Academy is following the directives from the Japanese government. Therefore, school will be closed from March 2 (Monday) until the spring break.

Currently the school office will continue to open weekdays from 9:00 - 17:00.

However, since we will be operating with reduced staff, we ask you to contact us at kiu@kyotoiu.ac.jp as much as possible.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

(UPDATED) School Closed From MONDAY (3/2)

Dear Parents,

KIU Academy is following the directives from the Japanese government. Therefore school will be closed from March 2 (Monday) until the spring break. The exact date for the end of the school closure at KIUA is not defined yet. We will announce it when it is decided.

For Elementary students, the academic year will be concluded today (February 28). Students will be issued final grades based on the work submitted up to this point. Next week we will also mail you a package with study materials for your children to use at home. We hope that this will help them retain the knowledge they gained this year and be prepared to return to school next April.

For Middle and High School students, assignments will be made available online (on FACTS Family Portal and through email, etc.) so that they can complete the essential content for this term. This means that your child will need access to the internet and a computer or tablet. We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause.

During this period of school closure, students are NOT ALLOWED on campus under any circumstances. All communication with teachers is to be done via the online resources we make available, or by standard mail. Middle and High school students should spend school hours at home doing school work. All students should avoid unnecessary outings, public transportation and crowded areas.

We ask parents to avoid calling the school phones because we will be operating with reduced staff.  Information for parents will continue to be posted on FACTS Family Portal and on the “News and Communication Portal” section of the school website ( kiua.kyotoiu.ac.jp ). If you have questions that are not addressed in the announcements, please email the school at kiu@kyotoiu.ac.jp

A final decision regarding the Graduation ceremony for High School seniors will be made in the next two weeks. We will keep monitoring the COVID-19 situation before reaching a decision. If a ceremony is held, it will probably be held with the minimum number of people possible (as per governmental recommendation).

KIUA will continue accepting applications for admissions, but for the time being all inquiries will be handled by phone and document reviews. Visitors to campus will be kept to a minimum.

Thank you for your understanding and support,

KIUA Administration
