KIUA Online Schooling Update

Dear Parents,

We hope that your families are well and that your children are adapting to online learning.

Using the latest technology available, as of April 13th (Monday) KIU Academy has been conducting classes online for our students. Although we do not know how long the present situation will last, we are committed to supporting our students with their learning uninterrupted. This allows students to stay on task and on schedule for their present and future studies at KIU Academy.

Due to the present situation we have decided to cancel the Open House event which was scheduled to take place this Saturday, April 25th. The teachers will be posting class syllabi on Google Classroom by next Monday, April 27th. If you have questions about a class, please contact the teacher by email.

It is yet unclear when the state of emergency will be lifted, but we look forward to reopening our doors and conducting classes on campus again.

Update on the suspected COVID-19 case

Dear Families,

The parents of the student in question reported that a doctor examined the student and an X-ray image was taken.

The student had normal temperature (36.5 Celsius) and nothing suspicious was found (no abnormalities, pneumonia etc).

The doctor stated that a COVID-19 test was not necessary but the student should stay home for the next 2 weeks.

A doctor's certificate was also issued and submitted to the school.

We are glad that the student seems to be doing well, but we also continue to urge our students to:

  • Monitor their symptoms (use the Health Checkup Sheet school created)
  • Avoid non-urgent or unnecessary outings
  • Avoid making statements on social media without medical evidence. Whether it be about others or themselves..

Please continue to take care and make sure to read the Health and Safety Policies the school established for the present COVID-19 situation.

We hope that your children are adapting well to distance / online learning this term.

Thank you,

KIU Academy

Possible COVID-19 case

Dear KIUA Families,

It has come to the school's attention that a high school student might be infected with COVID-19.

Please note that this is NOT a confirmed fact.

We contacted the student this afternoon and spoke with the student and the parents.

Although the student presented mild symptoms (cough, sputum, etc.) for the last 3 days, the body temperature has been normal.

The parents have agreed that the proper authorities should be contacted tomorrow (April 15) so that, if appropriate, an official test can be taken.

At this time it is not certain that the authorities will allow a test because the symptoms are mild, but the parents said they will request the test.

For the time being, all students should take special care to:

  • Monitor their symptoms (use the Health Checkup Sheet school created)
  • Avoid non-urgent or unnecessary outings
  • Avoid making "public announcements" on social media without medical evidence. It can lead to unnecessary anxiety.

As before, please be reminded that "Consultation Days" are cancelled for all students (elementary, middle and high school).

Given the present situation, KIUA faculty and staff will be working primarily from home.

For more updates, please continue to check the KIU Academy News site or the announcements on FACTS (RenWeb).

Thank you,

KIU Academy

Consultation Days Cancelled 面談日(登校日)キャンセル

IMPORTANT: Due to the changes in the recommendations of Kyoto Prefecture, we will not be holding the weekly consultation days when we were planning to have students come to meet the teachers for help and review.

First steps for distance learning

Dear parents,

We would like to share with you the first steps we would like to ask you to take to begin distance learning for your child. If you are able, please try to do these steps on Monday, April 13.

1.     Login to the gmail account which uses your child’s name

2.     Open the mails which are inviting your child to join classes in Google Classroom.

3.     Accept the invitations to each of your child’s classes and click to watch the short welcome explanation videos for each of the classes.

4.     Look at what your child’s first assignment is for each of the classes (which they can start working on if they have time.)

If you have not accepted the invitations to join the classes by noon on Tuesday, April 14, your child’s homeroom teacher will call you to see if you need any assistance.

Thank you for your cooperation as we learn together how to help your child continue learning even during this time that they are at home.

Please contact the school if you have any questions.

Update for ELEMENTARY parents

Dear parents,
We pray you and your families are all well.
It seems that not everyone has a clear understanding about our plans for elementary school on Friday, April 10. From 8:45-11:15 (bus pick up at JR Kyotanabe at 8:25 and at Kintetsu Shintanabe at 8:30; bus back to the stations leaving at 11:20), elementary students who are able to come safely will go to each of their new classes for ten minutes, meet their teachers, and receive textbooks and assignments.  We are trying to limit the number of people in the buildings and classrooms, so we ask parents not to enter the buildings on Friday.  If you do not feel comfortable sending your children to school, please feel free to keep them at home. You may pick up your child’s textbooks and study materials Friday afternoon or you can contact your child’s homeroom teacher to discuss how and when to receive them.
If you have not yet logged in to the new KIUA Google account we have prepared for you, we encourage you to do so using the information sent home with last term’s report cards. For parents who would like training in how to help their children use the Google online learning tools, we are planning seminars for parents next week.  Details about these seminars will be distributed soon.
Thank you for your support and cooperation,
Steve Rohrer
KIU Academy Vice Principal

UPDATE: April 6, 2020

Dear Parents,

Thank you for the many survey responses we received. They have been of great value in our preparations.

These are the main updates for today. More detailed information will be posted later today and tomorrow:

  • Orientation for NEW students only is still planned to take place on April 8. We will, however, change the content (it will focus on explanations related to online learning for NEW parents and students). We will also split the groups into two. Elementary in the basement and Secondary in the C2F lecture hall. New parents and students should monitor their temperature daily (starting today) and should not attend orientation if their temperature is at or above 37.5 C any day between now and April 8.
  • School will NOT start on April 9. We will have teacher training and preparation instead.
  • On Friday, April 10, we plan to have students come to school to return last year's textbooks and pick up new textbooks. This will not be compulsory, and we will set a special schedule in order to avoid large crowds at the same place at the same time. For those who cannot come we will provide textbooks by other means (such as online).
  • Online learning will start April 13 (Monday).
  • Student Schedules can be viewed now on FACTS Family Portal (RenWeb). To request changes, please contact the homeroom teacher or Mr. Rohrer by email. This is for returning students only. New students will get their schedules at orientation.
  • Regarding laptops for online learning, we recommend it for MS and HS students in particular because they can be used at school when things return to normal. Elementary parents may want to consider other alternatives, but please make sure that the device is able to access the internet, has an internet browser and is convenient for typing.
  • For students in high-level computer classes, Mr. Quintana is putting together recommended specs (if you choose to purchase a computer). It will be made available when we post the School Supply List.

Note that the prime minister is expected to declare a "state of emergency" tomorrow. Our plans may have to be changed to accommodate Kyoto prefecture's and Kyotanabe city's response to the emergency.

Thank you for your continued support of the school.

We are making detailed plans and will post them on this site as they become available.

To help us plan and better meet your needs, we ask that you respond to the online survey we sent home with Report Cards.

Some parents have not submitted survey answers yet. We would like to request that you spread the news and encourage other parents to access this site and take the survey.

Please also make the necessary preparations for your children to engage in online learning.
