UPDATE: July 3, 2021

Dear Parents,

We hope that you and your family are doing well.

As the end of the spring trimester approaches, we would like to update you on the following.

Because of persistent concerns related to COVID-19 that resulted in the extension of the State of Emergency in Kyoto until June 20, KIU Academy has decided that:

  1. In person Parent-Teacher Conferences are cancelled this term. Please feel free, however, to contact your child's homeroom teacher by phone or email. We hope to be able to have regular conferences next term.
  2. Midterm Grades will be issued June 11 (they will be emailed directly to parents). If you have questions or concerns, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
  3. MS-HS Sports Day will be postponed to fall term. Therefore June 21 will  be a regular school day for MS-HS (the substitute holiday due to Sports Day reverts to a regular class day). The tentative date for the event is October 16.
  4. The MS-HS Camp (grades 6-11) that was planned to be held at the National Noto Youth Friendship Center has been cancelled. In its place we are planning a different activity. More details about this will be sent to parents in the coming days.

Thank you for your understanding, cooperation and support.

Online Library for KIU Academy students

Dear Parents,

We would like to inform you that KIU Academy has recently joined an online library consortium with several other international schools.

Students will be able to access this service from home, provided that they have access to a device with internet access and a browser.

This is the site where students will be able to access the online library :

The KIUA online library is a resource for reading books and for listening to audiobooks in English. The catalog of books includes material for all age levels, but books that are not appropriate for young readers will be restricted based on their grade level.   Although the school has done some sorting of books, parents are the final judge of what they think is appropriate for their children. We recommend that parents monitor what their children are reading from the online library just as they would monitor what their children borrow from a public library.

KIU Academy students will be issued a personal username and password for the online library. Detailed information about the login information will be given in class by your child's English teacher. If your children have trouble logging in to the online library, please direct them to speak with their English teacher for help.

Starting next week we will give students their login information. At first this resource will be used primarily for "extended reading" purposes, but it might be expanded in the future to have a greater role in English classes.

Thank you for your continued support of the school.

Dear Parents and Students,

As you are aware, the Kyoto Prefectural Government is in the process of finalizing a request to the government to extend the state of emergency, and it is expected that the state of emergency will continue beyond Monday, May 31.

Therefore, we would like to encourage all families and students to review our school's policies, and to continue to work with a sense of urgency to prevent infections and promote good health.

Please continue to take your child's temperature every morning, and record it on the "Health Check-up Sheet" that you will receive at the end of this month. (If you lose the form, please print it from the link below.

Reference Link -- Health Check-up Sheet for Students (June) - ENG

In addition, please help us follow the emergency measures recommended by the Education Division of Kyoto Prefecture (Excerpts from "Requests during the Emergency Measures Period," Kyoto Prefecture, dated May 19):

  • If a student has a fever or other symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, difficulty breathing, etc.), be sure to take a break from school and consult your family doctor.
  • In principle, students you should stay home for 14 days if a person living with a student is found to be infected and you suspect that there has been close contact between them.
  • Please make it a habit to take your temperature, wash your hands thoroughly, and take care of your physical condition on a daily basis.
  • If you are using public transportation, be sure to wear a mask and do not talk while in the vehicle.
  • Refrain from going out and moving around unnecessarily, including during the daytime, and try to refrain from moving between prefectures unnecessarily.

If the declaration of a state of emergency continues after Monday, May 31, the "2021 - Spring Term SHORTENED School Schedule " will continue to apply.

When the declaration of a state of emergency is lifted KIUA will return to the schedule used at the start of the term.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Regarding a state of emergency

Dear Parents and Students,

As you have seen on the news, the prefectures of Tokyo, Osaka, Hyogo and Kyoto have requested that the Japanese national government declare a state of emergency in these areas. It is reported that the government will make a decision on April 23rd, and that the period of emergency will likely be between April 26th and May 9th.

If the Kyoto prefecture is included in a state of emergency declaration, KIU Academy will switch to using the "State of Emergency Schedule" (with homerooms starting at 9:40 [9:35 for high school]). This "State of Emergency Schedule" will start and end in accordance with the period of emergency that the government sets.

We do not plan any other modifications to our schedule or offering of classes unless the Kyoto prefectural government and board of education issue additional directives.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation,

H. Simoes
