Last weekend, the HS boys' and girls' basketball teams competed in the WJAA tournaments which conclude the WJAA basketball season. The HS boys beat the Sons of the Light to become the Small School Champions for the fourth time! The HS girls battled the Marist Bulldogs in their tournament and finished second to this strong team.

The HS boys played very well over the weekend. They won both of their pool games on Friday in convincing fashion. In the first game, they raced ahead of the Nagoya Dolphins and knocked them off in a called game at 60-29. In the afternoon, they beat CA 52-35, assuring themselves of a place in the semi-finals Saturday morning. The CA Falcons played well and knocked off the Hokkaido Huskies in the 2-3 seeds match-up Saturday, which set up a rematch for the semi-final. Aaron got the Flames off to a strong start in the first quarter, but Falcons proved tough to beat, edging closer and closer until halftime. From the 3rd quarter, the Flames began to slowly extend their lead, finishing the Falcons off 43-29. The other semi-final was a thriller with the home team Marist Bulldogs tying the Sons of the Light in regulation, but falling short in the overtime period. In the final, the Flames came out strong and took the game to the SOLICS team, opening up a quick lead. The Sons of the Light team played hard and came back with some good outside shooting. In the end, good shooting by Aaron and Seiji, rebounding by YuGeon and Joshua, and scrappy defense and steals by Andy kept the opponents at bay. The Flames gradually pulled away in the final minutes of the 4th quarter and celebrated as the buzzer sounded on a 58-39 finish.

The HS girls had to contend with a dominant Marist line up in their tournament in Nagoya. The Flames won their Friday games in the 5-team round-robin format, setting up a top two team competition with Marist. Marist won both of them, but the Flames did not give up. Congratulations to the Flames for taking second place and never backing down. Kudos to the Lady Bulldogs for a great run and finishing up as champions again for the fourth year in a row.
